Bayflex partial dentures are fabricated using advanced thermoplastic nylon resin. The partials are lightweight, comfortable and durable. Thermoplastics like Flexite, TCS (IFLEX), and Valplast all differ from regular thermosets like acrylic powder and liquid because they are already polymerized (cured) when manufactured and shipped to your lab. They can be manufactured in many forms, from sheet to pellets to powder. Once heat is introduced, the plastic is softened to the desired state and then injected into a mold. The only thing that changes is its physical shape; there are no actual chemical changes. Thermoplastics will differ depending on their molecular composition – some require higher temps to become moldable and some require greater injection pressures.
One advantage of this material is that there is also flexibility in the design of the types of clasps. We can often use the circumferential ring clasp on any freestanding tooth, and it works well on medially tipped mandibular molars. It can make an excellent transitional restoration during the healing period on implant cases

Your design option may be unilateral or bilateral, and these appliances are perfect for single-tooth RPDs (Nesbit). Bayflex® RPDs can also be fabricated with a metal frame or metal mesh (called hybrids), giving you the option of a firm vertical stop without the unattractive metal clasps.
The most notable advancement is that our Bayflex® partials can be repaired. To be able to reline or add teeth to these appliances is a huge plus when it comes to patients’ decision making. It is even possible to add Bayflex® flexible clasps to an existing acrylic partial.

The cost of a Bayflex® partial is comparable to that of a conventional partial. However, with a flexible partial, there is no tooth preparation or metal frame try-in, thus less chair time.
Patients with the following classifications make strong candidates, are not likely to require a try-in, and have high case-acceptance rates:
- Kennedy Class III (unilateral bounded partially edentulous)
- Kennedy Class IV (bilateral bounded anterior partially edentulous)
- Interim prostheses (popular for healing stages of implant cases)
A Bayflex® hybrid flexible partial
is appropriate for the following:
- Kennedy Class I (bilateral free ended partially edentulous)
- Kennedy Class II (unilateral free ended partially edentulous)
Esthetically, your patients will benefit from the natural tissue design and high degree of translucency present in Bayflex® partials. They blend well with the surrounding periodontal structures and the dentition. Their thinness provides your patients with greater comfort and confidence while speaking, smiling, and chewing. The material used allows for more feeling and taste sensation, so patients transition well into Bayflex® appliances. The flexibility of the material actually absorbs a portion of the shock from occlusal and masticatory forces. Most patients quickly adjust to Bayflex® for all of these reasons.
Overall, Bayflex® is as durable and strong as a conventional metal partial. Nylon-based RPDs actually withstand compressive forces better than their acrylic counterparts. It will not deteriorate chemically when in contact with fluids, bacteria, and the physical environment of the mouth. It is perfect for patients that may be sensitive to acrylic, as it is monomer free, biocompatible, and hypo-allergenic. Most importantly, your patients will love you for recommending these RPDs and are likely to refer their friends.
When you decide to move forward with a Bayflex® flexible partial, follow these tips to ensure a successful case:
- Use alginate impression material.
- Send your lab a poured model showing the vestibular borders, retromolar pad (for cases with distal extensions), a bite registration, gingival shade desired, and tooth shade.
- Just before delivery, submerge the appliance in hot water for approximately one minute. This will increase the flexibility and allow for excellent adaptation upon insertion.
